On I went, out of the wood, passing the man leading without knowing I was going to do so. Flip-flap, flip-flap, jog-trot, jog-trot, curnchslap-crunchslap, across the middle of a broad field again, rhythmically running in my greyhound effortless fashion, knowing I had won the race though it wasn't half over, won it if I wanted it, could go on for ten or fifteen or twenty miles if I had to and drop dead at the finish of it, which would be the same, in the end, as living an honest life like the governor wanted me to. -Alan Sillitoe, "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"

Two small things

When it comes to feminism, I'm more second wave than third wave. But the NYCM begs to differ and has me firmly in the third wave:

Who else is rocking the third wave with me? Anyone?

Next, this Sunday night I will evidently be running 2m with Lance Armstrong. Or running 2m and then going to an event that he will also be attending:

I'm not too fancy-like with my ability to link, but here's the RSVP site if you'd like to join me. (Let me know if you do sign up!)

  1. Darn...by the looks of it, I'm stuck in Wave 2. :(

  2. Maybe he'll be handing out samples of EPO. Oh, JK!You're running that after Yonkers? You little dynamo :)

  3. I'm signing up! But mostly in hopes that the t-shirts feature the tiny running ESB. See you at the back of the pack?

  4. Does Lance now hold the copyright on the colors Black and Yellow?

  5. I am third wave as well, green/corral 58. It looks like I will be peed on since I am under the bridge.

  6. I tried to sign up and nothing happened-did you get some sort of confirmation?

  7. I did get a confirmation - the screen immediately went to a confirmation number for me, and then they emailed me, too. And the confirmation was... you guessed it... on a black and yellow screen. (Incidentally it seems like Lance also holds the copyright on "fight like hell.")

  8. And Ellen (and anyone else going) - yes! We must meet up. I'll be at the back of the pack, the one lacking any tell-tale EPO track marks.

  9. I didn't get a confirmation number or an email, so can't tell whether it is full or what. They didn't ask for my email address, so that's not a great sign.

  10. Ah, interesting. The link I got (through email) had my email address embedded in it, which I then deleted to post it here. So they didn't ask me for my email, either, but it automatically triggered a reply when I entered my info.

If you want to try to dupe the system, here's the full url they sent me:

  11. Funny, I just commented on another blog about assigned wave! Popular topic.

In 2009, I had a marathon best of 4:22, from that same year, and yet was assigned wave 3, but I thought I was wave 2 material.

I have to say that starting at the front of wave 3 was a blast, as I was able to get almost all the way up front. Running up the bridge was a completely different, and enjoyable experience.

  12. I'm glad to hear that it was a blast. I can totally see how that would be, and I'm in one of the front corrals of the wave. Cool!

Basically, I totally lied about my anticipated finish time in an attempt to get into wave 2 (YES THERE I SAID IT). Either people are getting faster, or they're getting to be better liars - I don't remember what I put down (4:15?) but it was a few minutes faster than what I put down last year, when I was wave 2.

  13. I've in Wave 3 (10:40 start) :) I told them anticpiated finish of 4:30, so who knows how they figure it all out. Do you know when we find out where we run on the Verrazano?

  14. Tracy, your link totally worked and you are awesome. Back of the pack meet up for sure!

  15. I'm super jealous! I want to run this, but I will be in Philly. Boo.

And Im sure I'd be in wave 3, too. . . next year. I will be cheering in Brooklyn though!

  16. Kilax...you can see the corral info on this page.
http://www.nycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/717.htm I also put 4:30 expected finish and I am also wave 3.

  17. Wave 3 for the win! I think I've heard that despite what you put down as your expected finishing time, they reach back to take into account your past finishing times (if possible). Anyway, I also put 4:30 as my projected finish (TOTAL LIE) and I'm in Wave 3. But the first corral of Wave 3!

  18. Reported projected time: 5:00
    Wave: 3
    Corral: 61 Green (ouch!)
I'm signed up for the 8:15 ferry.
