Just some quick little begging for advice before the weekend.
What do you carry with you when you run?
This morning, I ran two miles more than I intended to. Emilie and I have a nice morning routine going on: I run about a third of a mile to the subway to meet her, we run for around 4ish miles, and then we part ways at another subway stop near her apartment, where I get on the train and head home.
Today I said goodbye to Emilie and entered the subway. I swiped my card. The turnstile read "insufficient fare;" my card expired last night, evidently. The sum total of what I had on me was: a cell phone, my apartment keys, and an expired metro card.
So I ran home and (obviously) tweeted it. And had someone ask me why I wasn't running with my wallet.
So, I ask: what do you carry when you run? I guess I should have been carrying some cash, but frankly I never do (whether running or not). The few times I've set aside a few dollars specifically for running, I've then gone and spent those few dollars - I'm just not a cash-person. Should I be?

Where on earth would you PUT a wallet when running? Clearly the ask-er was a non runner. ;)
ReplyDeleteI carry keys, pepper spray, ID, and either a credit card or a $20 (small enough to fit in that teensy pocket in my shorts). The idea of running with a full wallet has never crossed my mind...
Depends how far I'm going. Short - I carry nothing more than an iPod shuffle and leave my keys w/my doorman. Longer, I'll bring along some cash or a cc and my ID.
ReplyDeleteSuper long and then I bring Gu, metrocard, maybe waterbottle (hello?! I was expecting *that* post/review), etc.
I hate running with stuff.
And kickass for running home; I might been reduced to begging a stranger for a swipe. :)
I usually don't even carry as much as you do. Rarely take my cellphone, never have cash, ID, nothing. One more thing for me to lose/get stolen. (Not necessarily a smart thing to do -- when Karl broke his foot, he was 5 miles in a 10 mile run, then had to limp back to the start -- for 5 miles, since neither of us were running with our cellphones.) But maybe a bit of cash might be a good idea, no? A fiver for emergencies? Do you have a cellphone cover? Squeeze it in there?
ReplyDeleteIf it's a short running, and I'm running close to my house (aka within 3 miles) I run with very, very little, keys, maybe ipod, that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI always run with an Amphipod (http://www.amphipod.com/products/holders/music/-electronics/micropack-landsport) that clips to my waist. Permanently contains an old NYRR id card that has my name and several dollars for emergencies. For a given run, I'll add my keys, metrocard, gels, additional money or back/credit cards, chapstick, etc. It can flap around when overloaded with stuff, but for a typical run with a few things in it, perfection...
ReplyDeleteOn short runs I carry my keys. On longer runs, I usually carry my keys, id, phone, ipod, $5-$10 and a metro all in my spi-belt.
ReplyDeleteUsually just my keys. But for runs when I know I'll be going long but I don't have a plan as to where, I'll also bring chapstick, bus pass in case I get stranded or injured, ID, credit card, and a few dollars. I clip the bus pass, dollars, ID & CC all together with a paper clip and stick them in a plastic baggy, which I either stick in the pocket of my reflective vest or tuck into my sports bra. I don't even notice it.
ReplyDeleteAs I am oft injured, I always run with enough cash to cab it home if I need to. I could just bring my transit card, but if I'm limping I'd rather just so the cab ride of shame. Other than that, just keys.
ReplyDeleteWow, thank you for the responses! Okay, it sounds like I'm the idiot who needs to start carrying cash if I'm not near my house. I've tried a spibelt with no success, and I don't usually carry a handheld for shorter runs - I think I'm going to try the bra trick. I like the idea of the clip-on waist pack, too.
ReplyDeleteUnless I'm running with a friend, I never get more than a mile from my apartment, so I only run with my phone in my pocket or iFitness belt, if I remember it. I have an ID tag on my shoes on the just in case.
ReplyDeleteDepends...
ReplyDeletePretty much anything over 2-3 miles:
Phone, water/powerade, a piece of gum
Longer than 6 - GU
I've been carrying an amphipod belt when we run in the mornings, mostly so that I have my phone with me. When I go on longer runs, I bring my metrocard and if I think I'm getting toward my exp date on it, I'll bring a couple bucks or my debit card. These last few all fit in the little pocket on that handheld water bottle I have, which I only minded having with me the first few times I wore it (after that I just got used to it, which is something because before that I *hated* carrying anything, even something as small as my keys) with me before I ran).
ReplyDeleteI have to say, though, this is all still a work in progress. I have basically accumulated stuff as time has gone on and I've learned a lesson from being stuck without it.
Umm, usually nothing at all unless I need a a key or fluid replacement. No id, no money, no phone, no bus token. I realize this is incredibly foolish.
ReplyDeleteI carry $20 with me when I run any run over 75 minutes, and I think I might run out of gels or whatever and need to stop by the grocery or running store on my path. But on a 4 mile run, I never bring one. I have one of those wrist IDs since sometimes I'm sometimes out on farm roads and who the hell knows what will happen out there. And I run most often with my iPhone, in case I need to call to pick my ass up if my body breaks down.
ReplyDeletemyrunshorts = me. I have a RoadID for if I'm mauled by a car but no phone, no money, no nothin'. well, on long runs I carry water since DC bubblers are notoriously undependable.
ReplyDeleteI only ever carried cash with me on long runs, and half the time I didn't have any so I just took my credit card instead (in case I needed to buy extra fluids/food). Typically I just take my keys and, if I'm running long enough to need it, some fuel. That's it.
ReplyDeleteI keep a copy of my insurance card and $10 in my ifitness belt. I carry that along with my phone & pinned front door key whenever I run. I've found it doesn't bounce at all (unlike the spibelt) and it's easier than always having to go around grabbing stuff. If I'm running longer than 7-8 miles and going beyond Prospect Park, I switch to a nathan belt with water bottles and add a metrocard and fuel.
ReplyDeleteThis is the one I have, but I wear it with the pouch in the small of my back and no gus sticking on the side. My abs and thighs do look just like that though.
