On I went, out of the wood, passing the man leading without knowing I was going to do so. Flip-flap, flip-flap, jog-trot, jog-trot, curnchslap-crunchslap, across the middle of a broad field again, rhythmically running in my greyhound effortless fashion, knowing I had won the race though it wasn't half over, won it if I wanted it, could go on for ten or fifteen or twenty miles if I had to and drop dead at the finish of it, which would be the same, in the end, as living an honest life like the governor wanted me to. -Alan Sillitoe, "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"

Today was a very unusual day

Something auspicious happened today.

Was it... the fact that I slept a record 5 hours last night? No, but that was good. (Seriously: what's up with my sleep problems lately?)

Was it... the fact that it was 50 degrees out at 6am when I left my house? No, but that was sort of good and sort of bad. (Seriously: what's up with global warming?)

Was it... the fact that I wore SHORTS today? YES!

For the first time in probably five years, I wore shorts to run and didn't hate it! I'll always have a place in my heart for my running skirts, but I'm happy to have found a pair of shorts that (tentatively) work. A new day dawns?

  1. I got these shorts on sale and love them: http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=46806&vid=1&pid=819215 Sadly, they don't have black ones anymore, but the dark gray doesn't show much sweat. They're flattering, have pockets, drawstring at the waist so they don't give me a muffin top (the underarmour ones have a super tight elastic band that is awful), super comfortable material and of course: they don't ride up. I've been using them for my muay thai classes (I warm up on the treadmill), but if they're not riding up with high kicking, they're not riding up at all!

  2. It was on your lead that I found the gym girl ultra, so I'm trusting you! I hope they're as flattering as you promise :) Even as tight as they look?

  3. Oiselle Isabel shorts that I bought from their online sample sale. Obnoxiously, I went home and went online to order 5 more pairs and found them not their. I might try another of their shorts, though. More likely I'll become the girl who wears the same shorts every run.
