On I went, out of the wood, passing the man leading without knowing I was going to do so. Flip-flap, flip-flap, jog-trot, jog-trot, curnchslap-crunchslap, across the middle of a broad field again, rhythmically running in my greyhound effortless fashion, knowing I had won the race though it wasn't half over, won it if I wanted it, could go on for ten or fifteen or twenty miles if I had to and drop dead at the finish of it, which would be the same, in the end, as living an honest life like the governor wanted me to. -Alan Sillitoe, "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"

This will get me running again!

I signed up for a half in DC this November.

A half marathon with a twist, that is. Or, as they say on their website:
Most runs have water stations and bananas on hand for refueling.  The DC Half and Half Marathon challenges you to down a half smoke with chips at the midway point.
To be honest, I don't exactly know what a "half smoke" is, but I'm assuming it doesn't involve tobacco. And is edible. And that this race was basically made for me.

  2. The Krispy Kreme Challenge is still the gold standard of culinary athleticism, as far as I'm concerned.

    1. Two things: one, I've wanted to do that for aaaaages. Perhaps I should plan around it some year? and two, I've always wanted to try a burger on a donut bun. Someday, even if I have to make it myself.

  3. You should probably practice the eating before the race.

  4. As a new DC transplant, I just learned what a half smoke is.
Um... NOT something I'd want to eat mid-race, but if YOU want to do it, I'll be happy to take photos!

    1. My DC friends were split on "oh, yay!" and "what is a half smoke?" And I'll need photos. Mark your calendar.
